Who We Are

Established in 1724 and now one of the larger, more vibrant United Church of Christ (UCC) churches in New England, the purpose of The First Congregational Church of Southington is to love and worship God; extend God’s radically-inclusive love to all people everywhere; make more and better disciples of Jesus Christ; and inspire people and society to become more and more just, loving, compassionate and Christ-like. You will find our church to be an accepting, caring, non-judgmental community, where faith is renewed, lives are transformed, and power for positive living is received.

Our faith is 2000 years old, but our thinking is not.

We are friends, family, strangers, visitors, and neighbors brought together by the Spirit of God to joyfully worship and enjoy Christian fellowship together. Our faith is based on our individual understanding of the Word as revealed through Jesus Christ and found in the Bible. Our faith is nurtured by sharing with each other our understanding of the Word. We are dedicated to letting God’s love and grace work through us.

The First Congregational Church of Southington is a member of the United Church of Christ and of the Connecticut Conference of the UCC however it is independent in all matters. This church is owned by the congregation and responsible only to its members. The congregation, through its elected boards and committees as well as its Annual Meeting, is entirely responsible for running all aspects of its church life including the calling of ministers to help guide and direct its spiritual life. As in all democracies the success of the church is dependent on the active participation of its members.

Open and Affirming

In 2005 our congregation voted to designate our church as Open and Affirming*. This means that with God’s grace, we welcome and affirm the total identity of all people as beloved children of God. We are a congregation that seeks to break down the barriers of prejudice, declaring respect for the worth and dignity of all persons, embracing differences in age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, and physical, emotional, and mental capability.

*Open and Affirming Statement: We, the members of The First Congregational Church of Southington, Connecticut, hereby declare ourselves to be an open and affirming congregation. We accept the challenges and joys of Christian faith, a faith profound enough to embrace even uncertainty. We struggle with the difficult issues of our day, understanding that God’s Word touches and guides us as a congregation and as individuals.

With God’s grace, we welcome and affirm the total identity of all people as beloved children of God. We are a congregation that seeks to break down the barriers of prejudice, declaring respect for the worth and dignity of all persons, embracing differences in age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation (including straight, gay, lesbian), marital status (including single, married, committed, divorced, or separated), ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, and physical, emotional, and mental capability. We also recognize and affirm loving, committed, and diverse families. We actively welcome all people to become members of our church and to share fully in our church’s life and leadership, ministry and fellowship, worship and sacraments, and responsibilities and blessings.
